The season opener for Indy Car was abruptly cancelled by the government in Brasilia. The promoter, BAND, which had sponsored the race since 2010, worked out a deal with the Brazilian government to help bring the race back for 2014. Details of why they backed out are sketchy at this time. Sadly, it was to be held on a purpose built track this year.

The details we have at this time is that the government of Distrito Federal is in debt, have a huge financial problem in his hands and decided that the race was prejudicial to the city!

The major problem is that the contract was signed bythe last governor, and the new one (took his place january 1st) call it quits.

I'm not making any assumption, but DF is know to have a "little" case of corruption, and maaaaaybe that what caused the financial problem...

So, another year without Indy in Brazil!

To be honest, I hope that Indycar NEVER again try to make another race over here, so the governors and Bandeirantes TV (the promoter of the race) learn to respect the people.

This makes me sad. Brazilians are some of the most passionate racing fans on earth. The series has quite a few talented Brazilian drivers that are always fun to watch. Just a total shame that they won't get to see their fellow Brazilians race in their homeland. I hate to see events like this get cancelled as it further destabilizes an already fragile Indycar organization. I hope they can work something out to bring this race back next year and I would also love to see Japan return as well. There are many suitable track in Japan for Indycar racing and the Japanese fans are similar to Brazilians in their support of racing. (Twin Ring Motegi Road Course is my favourite Japanese track)

You seem knowledgeable about the political goings-on in Brazil. Thanks for your insight. Are you Brazilian?

Yes. I love my country, but the politicians over here just make me want to take my a.. and my fiancee and move for other country...

If you want to take a few laugh at us, search for Petrobras scandal...

EDIT: as as a lawyer over here, I must read and see the news..

I will do that. Not for the laughs so much as to learn more of the culture. Scandals always include some perspective on culture. Thanks.

I can understand how governmental problems can affect all sorts of other areas of a country and its social structure. While it is regrettable and disappointing, taking it out on sporting events that would bring money into the local economy seems almost criminal. I have noticed this in Canada where it seems racing fans are not just ignored but almost universally reviled. We always seem to get the short end of the stick so to speak. I have a friend who came to Canada two years ago for university and I have heard some very bad sounding stories about Brazil. Particularly with regards to the government's treatment of the environment. If you ever do want a new home you are always welcome in Canada. Just bring a sweater.

Oh no, I did not mean to imply that. It is just that there are subtle indicators of what drives crooked men to do what they do. It happens everywhere. Especially here in the US. I have great respect for the people and government of Brasil. I only want to learn more about them.
